Filming took place from March , Directed by: Edward Bernds. Shemp is a singing instructor who must marry before six o'clock in order to inherit his late uncle's fortune. After proposing to all of his old girlfriends, who promptly turn him down, Moe and Larry try to set Shemp up with the new tenant across the hall (Christine McIntyre), who mistakes Shemp for her cousin Basil.
MOE: Alright, easy! LARRY: [pushes Benton away] Shut up! MOE: Hey! Sit him down. We'll get a new grip. When they let him go, Shemp gets pulled by the strings and he hits his face on the piano twice] [Moe and Larry run up to Shemp to help him get up] MOE: Easy now.
Get this stuff off! MOE: You get into messes every time. Give me your arm. SHEMP: Wait a minute, fellas. MOE: How do you like that?
Get up! We're ready for the kickoff. BENTON: Join hands, you lovebirds. They all enter the room] WOMAN 1: [pointing to Shemp] There he is!
WOMAN 2: Wait a minute! BENTON: She's the bride! WOMAN 3: [pushes her way through] Oh yeah? Not while I got my strength. SHEMP: Yes, but I'm with [turns to Miss Dinkelmeyer] WOMAN 3: [pulls Shemp] Didn't you?
SHEMP: Yes, but you turned me down. WOMAN 3: That was before I read the papers. Let her rip! WOMAN 4: Oh no!
He proposed to me too. They all fight over Shemp] LARRY: [to Moe] Look at that! We better do somethin' fast. Wait a minute. What's going on here? LARRY: [to the women] Ladies!
WOMAN 4: Stop it, you big bully! Stop it, you big bully! Another woman rips a chunk of hair off of Shemp's head] SHEMP: Ohhhh!
BENTON: Yes. BENTON: Yes indeed. Oh oh! Moe and Larry are still determined to stop it. Larry grabs a gun to use as a club] MOE: Wait a minute!
You wouldn't hit a lady with that. LARRY: Oh, thanks. Larry attempts to swing the rifle at her, but he accidentally hits Moe, who is behind him] MOE: Oh!
SHEMP: Never. Moe attempts to swing the rifle at her, but he accidentally hits Larry, who is behind him] LARRY: Oh!
MOE: [turns to Larry] What happened? Moe walks up to one of the woman and starts blubbering. He turns around and the woman grabs him by the hair.
She then pushes Moe's face and he gets pushed back. Moe lands on the bear trap on the chair] MOE: Oh oh oh oh! WOMAN 3: I'll fix your headache. An octopus has got me!
Hold still a minute! MOE: Oh! LARRY: I'll get it. Hold still. SHEMP: I give up. I'll marry you. One woman throws a vase of flowers at the other woman, but she ducks.
The vase hits Shemp and knocks him out. Please, please hurry. SHEMP: Hold hands, you lover birds. LARRY: How are you? MOE: How am I.
LARRY: [looks at his watch] We made it. It's six o'clock and you're married. SHEMP: [confused] What happened?
What happened? MOE: You're married, kid. Say something. SHEMP: [looks at Miss Dinkelmeyer and yells] Help! Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by tsbco1a This episode had so many new and funny gags it was great.
I can't you imagine Shemp being a singing instructer. Also the gags that happened near the end when all the women show up to marry shemp Great episode.
Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by DocWatson Edited by Dunrobin This is probably the most recognized and popular Shemp short. The gags are priceless, and Shemp's improv skills are memorably on display here.
Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by Justin T Not just one of the best Shemp shorts, but one of the best Three Stooges shorts ever PERIOD.
Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by sickdrjoe Edited by shemps 1 Continued re-viewings of BRIDELESS pay continued dividends - some of Shemp's best work here and with the Stooges in general appears in what essentially are solo scenes, such as his 'vocal coach' scene with shrieking soprano Dee Green.
Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by BJR Edited by shemps 1 CLASSIC This is the best Three Stooges short ever, with no exceptions. This is all three Stooges at their best, and Shemp's performance here is better than any Curly performance IMO.
Moe and Larry are also at their best. Many people say that Who Done It? It just doesn't get any better than the phone booth scene.
The one in Scrambled Brains is good too, but this one is better, despite only featuring Moe and Shemp. The entire last five or six minutes is the longest strand of nonstop laughs I've ever seen -- from the time the boys enter Sitka's place to the ending is nonstop ROFL comedy.
There are just so, so, so many classic lines from this short, but this will have to be my favorite: 5 pokes!!
RE: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by jaronson This is my second favorite Stooge short behind CORNY CASANOVAS mainly because of its many one-liners, especially from Shemp.
Being a music student, I really loved Shemp's remark to Mr. Benton's piano that it was out of tune. This is also one of the only times when Shemp gets to abuse Larry as much as he does, which is executed perfectly.
RE: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by jagman One of the best Shemp episodes ever! Dee Green played against Shemp so well that I'm surprised they didn't use her more often.
Shemp is hilarious as he recoils in horror from her advances. The Fan Club meeting in Pennsylvania earlier this year featured a couple that got married at the Saturday evening banquet; and before the ceremony, they actually played out the Brideless Groom scenes, with the groom as Shemp, the bride as Dee Green, and assorted relatives in other roles.
It was a wonderful evening. Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by tburnell This is one of the funniest Shemp episodes and I'll never forget how hard I laughed the first time I ever saw this one when Moe set up the bear trap and got pushed into it himself.
Great stuff! It's like therapy! Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by Stooge Edited by Stooge An absolute masterpiece, and my 2nd favorite Shemp short only behind WHO DONE IT?
The plot is excellent, the gags are excellent, and each Stooge shines in this short, even Larry. I especially loved the scene where Shemp and Moe get into a fight in the phone booth.
Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by stoogespice This is probably the most hilarious Shemp episode ever made! Everything about is funny!
I like how Shemp's singing student screams more than sings, I like telephone wire tangling, and even the part where one of Shemp's ex-girlfriends pulls strands of Shemp's hair out!
Here are the parts that I think are the funniest: when Christine McIntyre finds out Shemp's not her cousin Basil and slaps him around saying, "How dare you pretend to be my cousin Basil!
This is a must-see for any Stooge fan! I guarantee you'll end up falling down on the floor laughing so long and hard that tears will stream down your face!
Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by Ginger Grey What a great Stooges' short! Definitely, my favorite!
There are so many funny lines and memorable scenes. This is your little snookums Listen, I'm about to do ya a big favor Will ya marry me?
Then, Moe and Shemp getting tangled up in the telephone cord, while Larry chews off his fingernails - hilarious.
And what about the hotel employee catching Moe kissing Larry on the cheek, and Moe slapping Larry "Cut it out! Christine McIntyre, Emil "Hold hands, you love birds" Sitka and Dee Green are all terrific, too.
I could go on and on about this one. I love Curly, but this is the funniest Three Stooges' short ever made. An emphatic 4 Pokes! Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by ScooterB This is my favorite Three Stooges' short.
It's hilarious from beginning to end. There are no "dead periods" in this short, at all. The "phone booth" scene just cracks me up and Emil Sitka, Christine McIntyre and Dee Green are terrific.
For a Stooge fan, it doesn't get any better. At least, that's my opinion. Re: BRIDELESS GROOM Posted by FineBari3 I think this is the best Shempie!
I also think this shows off the wonderful stock performers in Emil Sitka and Christine McIntyre; they are both brilliant!
Oh, the woman that plays Dee as well Get some picks. To inherit a fortune, voice teacher Shemp must marry before six o'clock, but no girl will accept his proposal.
Finally one of his repulsive students agrees to marry him, just in the nick of time. When the rest of the prospective brides hear about the inheritance, they show up at the ceremony and a free for all ensues.
Shemp marries before the deadline, but wishes he was still a free man. OK, the other reviewers have pretty much covered the main points of this great little gem, i.
Comedy, or acting in any genre for that much, is merely interpreting a scene and lines that someone else has written and performed before, if it's not a totally original creation.
Here we have The Stooges essentially doing material that was written and performed by someone else and yet for a low budget, short time span of a film, they're handling things just fine.
Regardless of what the credits say on their films, real "stooge-philes" know that they had a lot of input on lines and direction.
They took their work as seriously as a surgeon does a vital operation. Words spoken by Emil Sitka himself during a documentary about the boys.
Here, what appears to be their usual anarchy over something so simple as getting married, is actually organized chaos.
Every line is perfectly timed with a related physical action. How many comedians are around today that can claim such mastery?
Most obviously the Seinfeld crew but none others that I've seen in the last 35 years of watching TV. Simply watch, laugh and enjoy!

Then Chris delivered a haymaker — a right that knocked Shemp through the door. When the take was over, Shemp was groggy, really groggy.
His nose was broken. Chris put her arms around him and apologized tearfully. You sure as hell did!
